New Method Speeds Up Development of Medication
Bernhard Spingler and his team have developed a novel method that speeds up the process of determining crystal structures of organic salts and significantly reduces the effort required to do so. As about 40 percent of all active pharmaceutical ingredients are salts, this new crystallographic method is set to greatly accelerate drug development.

Ralph Koitz and Mauro del Ben awarded with the IBM Research Prize
The 2016 IBM Forschungspreis was awarded to equal parts to Mauro del Ben and Ralph Koitz of the University of Zürich for their PhD theses entitled “Efficient Non-Local Dynamical Electron Correlation for Condensed Matter Simulations” and “Functional Two-Dimensional Materials: A Computational Study of Complex Processes at Interfaces”. They both were member of the research group of Prof. Jürg Hutter.

Oliver Zerbe publishes "hot paper " in Angewandte Chemie
Oliver Zerbe and co-authors identfied a protein in snails with a one third higher detoxification capacity for cadmium than the already known protein. The authors postulate that the evolultion of these proteins may be a strategy of the gastropodes to survive in heavy metal-polluted environments.
